Sensational return for Dalglish? (Football)
With pressure mounting on Rafa Benitez, the word is that Kenny Dalglish could be in line for a sensational return to the Liverpool hot-seat.
If that were to happen, it would echo Kevin Keegan’s return to Newcastle as manager.
Ironically, the two are linked as it was Dalglish who replaced Keegan as the darling of the Anfield faithful when the latter moved to Hamburg.
Unfortunately for Keegan, his second spell as Newcastle boss ended in a bitter dispute which was only recently resolved when he successfully won his claim for constructive dismissal.
If Benitez were to leave Liverpool, Dalglish would be in a prime position to take over as he is already on the books.
The Scot returned to Anfield in July in a dual role, combining his role as an ambassador with a job in the Academy.
The appointment of Dalglish would probably be welcomed by the majority of Liverpool supporters.
He was of course a highly popular player for the Reds and later enjoyed great success as manager.
Dalglish was the last Liverpool boss to deliver the League title back in 1990 before quitting when the pressure on him proved to be too much.
He later won the Premier League title with Blackburn and guided Newcastle to the runner-up spot.
Dalglish’s last stint as manager was a brief, unsuccessful spell in caretaker charge at Celtic in 2000.
At the age of 58, would Dalglish want to take on such a job if he were offered the chance to manage Liverpool again?
Only he can answer that one.
What a story it would be if he did take charge and managed to turn things around.
For now of course, there is no vacancy to fill as Benitez remains in charge.
Liverpool’s results must improve quickly, however, if the Spaniard is to keep his job.
